Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (post-laminectomy syndrome) is a broad term used to describe persistent pain after spine surgery. Unfortunately, this is not always an accurate term meaning that the surgery has failed. There is no cure
for chronic back pain and even after surgery the conditions that lead to surgery in the first place will typically continue to worsen (ddd, arthritis, etc). Success rates for back surgery vary and should be discussed in detail with
your doctor. Typically, the best way to avoid post-laminectomy syndrome is to only have an operation if there is an identifiable anatomic lesion that can be surgically corrected.
